  3. Why do they call it a self storage company instead of a storage unit? I thought the entire place was called the storage unit. Maybe they only say self storage in Canada. http://www.countryhillsstorage.com/

  5. I really like the idea of self-storage for all of the extra stuff I have. I am not a hoarder, but I cannot bring myself to get rid of certain family heirlooms. Because I don't have enough space in my home, self-storage is definitely the way to go for me.

  7. I didn't realize there were so many small houses in circulation. It seems like people are building bigger and bigger, but those stats show a lot of small homes as well. If I lived in a house any smaller than the one I own, I'd have to get a storage unit. There's just no way to fit.

  10. I have been thinking about getting a storage unit to clear up some space in my house. I just have a lot of clutter and I think self storage would be the perfect solution. This helped me out a lot with deciding what I should get rid of. I figure I could do without seasonal clothing and the majority of our family memorabilia for now. http://ministoragestable.com

  12. I wonder what storage units are used for other than for moving, family reasons, or renovation purposes. I didn't realize that storage units are used for people who are deployed by the military. That makes sense, if they don't have a place to keep their belongings safe while they're serving overseas. I suppose mini storage units might be useful for university students.

  15. I used a storage locker for years before I got a house big enough for all of my stuff. It's a great investment. It didn't cost too much, you know the stuff is safe, and you can always go get stuff if you need it. If anybody is having issues with storage space, I would suggest getting a storage locker.

    1. I'm in a similar situation, Jackson. Except we're actually downsizing instead of upgrading. We have a lot of unnecessary space in the house. Of course, we also have a lot of stuff that we don't really want to get rid of. I'm thinking about renting a self storage unit to keep some stuff in that won't fit in the new house. Hopefully I can find a good unit! http://www.diazsuperstorage.com

  16. It's interesting that the number two reason for using a storage unit is as a student between houses or living abroad. I'm not surprised-- as a student, I can attest to the constant moving. I figured moving would be number one, but it's interesting to see how high students rank after that. There are a lot of storage unit companies around college campuses as well.

  17. Yes I have an experience of self storage in Mulgrave and truly I got a very hot deal from online and booked storage space for my furniture at same time without giving second thought. Best part is there are units at only ground floor for storing which helps in safety of our furniture.

  18. Thanks for the great information. I've been thinking about buying my own self storage for when I move, but I wasn't sure if it would be a good idea or not. After reading this I can see why someone would buy a storage, and now I think I'll end up buying one myself.

  20. I have a bunch of old stuff from when I was single. I want to give it to my little brother when he moves out of the house next year. I have been thinking about putting it in a storage unit until then. It would be a good way to keep the stuff without having it in my house taking up space for the things my wife and I have.

  22. I think that having a storage unit is very helpful. My family uses 3 units. We have all of our holiday decorations in one, big furniture in another and extra clutter in the last. I usually get a new one around Christmas to hide my kids' gifts in. http://www.storagestation.ca

  23. It makes sense that moving would be the highest cause for people looking for storage units. My husband and I aren't moving yet, but I've been thinking about getting a small storage unit to start storing things that we don't use very often, like seasonal clothes and holiday items. We are slowly running out of space as we keep accumulating more things. Kiara, I like the idea of having a unit to store gifts in! I wouldn't have thought of that. I usually just try to hide my gifts around the house. http://www.lakecountystorageunits.com/HowStorageWorks.aspx

  24. Thanks for the tips. I agree that the biggest reason some one would need to rent a storage unit is because they need to move and cant move all of there stuff at one time. I need to find a good storage unit to place all of my extra stuff for my move coming up next month.

  25. I have recently been looking into getting a self storage unit because we are renovating our house. I need to get some stuff out of our house so that the work can begin. I don't want the stuff to clutter up the rest of our house, so I am going to get a storage unit to keep everything in. It might be a pain to have to go back and forth for our stuff, but I think that it is a better alternative.

  26. It does not surprise me that moving is the leading cause for need of a storage unit. My brother is moving soon and is looking for an affordable storage unit to store some furniture and sporting equipment that he can't take with him. Storage units are very convenient when you don't want to get rid of possessions that you can't have at the moment. When I eventually move out, I will have a few possessions that I will want to save because they have sentimental value to me.

  27. I have never utilized a self storage unit before, but I really like the idea behind them. It would be nice to have a place to put all of the things I am currently not in need of, but all the while I know I can take them out should I have need of them. Maybe it is time I start storing all of my decorations I have until the holiday comes around that they are meant for.

  29. It makes sense that over half of storage needs are because someone is moving. I downsized recently myself, so I get it. Some things are really useful or have sentimental value, but won't fit anymore. It's not a bad idea. http://www.fyshwickselfstorage.com.au/

  31. Wow, it's interesting to see the differences of the existing home owners and what the home buyers want. Once you own a home it's a little different with what you'd prefer it seems from this diagram. It makes sense that you would want a ton of storage space. Sometimes you have to get additional storage when your garage gets filled up!

  36. My parents sold their home recently and downsized their possessions. It was an eye opening experience for me. It made me want to take a hard look at the things I have and see if I could get rid of some of them. There are a number of things I haven't used in the last six to nine months that could create more space if I got rid of them. However, they might just go into storage.

  37. The purpose of a storage unit is to store the things you have where you don't have space for it at home. I've been thinking about storing some items that I rarely use. They are mainly seasonal decorations where I don't need them in my house for the rest of the year. I'll call up the place and see if they have any units available. http://www.sentryministorage.com

  38. My favorite part of this whole info graphic was "when in doubt, move it out!". I for one really need to take this idea seeing how my house is littered with a lot of outdated items. My problem is that I will purchase an item and after it has fulfilled its use I hang on to it just in case I need it again. Having a storage unit would allow for me to keep my house clean and keep all my items too.

  44. Thanks for sharing the info-graphic, I always prefer looking at numbers laid out in graphs, it helps me understand more. I think that I will definitely show this to my wife when I bring up the possibility of needing self-storage. We would record everything that we put in, to be extra safe, but I think we would trust a storage unit to hold some of our stuff.

  45. I love this infographic! It makes the whole process much simpler. You're right: putting things you 'might' use in storage is a great way to cut back on unnecessary space. 46. Based off of home size alone more people should be using long-term storage units. There will be so much less clutter in people's homes. I know that we have a lot of items that are only uses seasonally and could certainly be stores elsewhere. http://www.usstorage.us

  48. I live in a college town, and I think most of the storage units around here see students who are caught between housing. In their case, it's nice to have a place to store items that are too big for their current apartment. I can see why moving is the biggest reason nationally, though. http://www.statewideselfstorage.com

  52. What fascinating thing to know that the second biggest reason to get a public storage unit is due to students using the units during the school year. It sounds about right because my daughter talked about renting a public storage unit. Hopefully she'll find one that would be big enough to store her instruments, bags, and other furniture.
